My Lisa has been on your site for about a year now. Unfornately on 10/20/06 my daughter and I had to help Lisa to the Rainbow Bridge at the age of 14.  She had congestive heart failure, an enlarged heart and in the past week suffered a spinal cord injury that prompted our decision. She was a loving companion to us for 11 years and will be greatly missed. She accepted any human and animal that came into her life like they were long lost family. She was my first dachshund and first rescue. RIP my darling girl.

Overweight dogs and cats

America’s obesity problem isn’t just a people problem—a recent survey indicated that 40% of America’s pet population is overweight. And, just as in humans, obesity puts a dog at risk for serious illnesses such as arthritis and various skin diseases.

My Fat Dog tells the truth about what dogs need to stay trim and healthy:

I am writing to tell you about a very special little guy I am fostering. He is a nine week old pit bull puppy who was born with quite deformed front limbs.

Hello, lovers of special pets! I am writing to tell you about a very special little guy I am fostering.

He is a nine week old pit bull puppy who was born with quite deformed front limbs. He was abandoned on someone’s front porch, and that person brought him to the animal hospital I work at here in Portland, OR to be euthanized. If you take a look at the pictures attached, you will see why I was hard-pressed to take part in such a thing. He is not in any pain, and quite healthy apart from his unusual forelimbs.

I am writing this to let pet owners that have a disabled or injured pet not to give up hope

October 10th, 2006

I am writing this to let pet owners that have a disabled or injured pet not to give up hope. I have a beautiful little Chihuahua named Tetsey. She is 2 pounds and thanks to your web site, I found Doggone Wheels. I ordered my little girl a quad chair due to not being able to walk and we still don’t know why. This in turn prompted another web site that referred me to a wonderful vet in Williamsburg, VA. who does holistic medicine or alternative medicine. Her name is Dr. Lessinger. Between the chair and Dr. Lessinger, and swimmimg, my little girl is now walking. We ordered a life vest from Handicapped Pets so she could swim everyday. This was the advice of Dr. Lessinger. So to all of you that may need another avenue to try, please don’t give up. Tetsey can’t run but she is able to go out for walks, eat normally and do most everything everyone else does. She has just started trying to stand on her back legs with help. Thank you Handicapped Pets for truly helping when we thought there was none! My home vet is amazed at her progress. He thought she would never walk. Thank you again and keep helping our little four (or sometimes 3) legged campanions!

I am your dog, and I have something I would like to whisper in your ear

I AM YOUR DOG

Author Unknown

I am your dog, and I have a little something I would like to whisper in your ear.

I know that you humans lead busy lives. Some have to work. Some have children to raise. It always seems like you are running here and there, often much too fast, often never noticing the truly grand things in life.

Look down at me now, while you sit there at your computer. See, the way my dark brown eyes look at yours. They are slightly cloudy now. That comes with age. The gray hairs are beginning to ring my soft muzzle.

IN MEMORY OF BLIND DOGS – A LETTER FROM THE BRIDGE

The Whisper Of Love

It had been less than a week since my best friend, my “heart dog,” had passed away. The tears would not stop flowing, the pain was unbearable and sleep was impossible. I stumbled to the kitchen. There on the table, was an envelope. On it was written one word. “Mom.” Read the rest of this entry »

Kathy Barton’s 4the grade class saves handicapped pets - AGAIN!

May 4th, 2006

Kathy Barton’s 4th Grade Class Learns about handicapped Pets and raises money for two carts.

May 1, 2006. Velma Oklahoma.

Kathy Barton and her troupe of 4th graders made headlines last year when they reached out to an injured dachshund in Tennessee and raised enough money to fly her to her new home in Maine and purchase the wheels she needed to walk again. See the Full Story.

This year, she and a new group of 4th graders have done it again, saving two dogs.

For the second year in a row, Kathy’s 4th grade class was learning about handicapped pets; blind dogs, pets with cancer, and animals that need wheelchairs, harnesses, slings, pet diapers, and other handicapped pet equipment. Kathy Barton works closely with HandicappedPets.com, the leading website for products, services, and support for handicapped pets. She is teaching that pets (as well as people) with handicaps can lead happy, healthy lives and are treasured companions.

Soon this class, like last year’s would be planning bake sales, coke floats, and fund raisers to benefit their chosen special pet. Several projects included researching handicapped pets and designing inventions to help animals.

Last year they raised enough money to help Johanna, a dog that had been injured by a gang of teens. They paid to fly the dog to her new home in Maine and purchased a wheelchair for her. This year, the class helped Scooter, a Chihuahua they found on the HandicappedPets.com website that was born without front legs or feet, but is otherwise completely healthy. They also made contributions to several handicapped pets organizations and put together ‘care packages’ for some of the animals pictured in the gallery section of HandicappedPets.com. Soon, they’ll be purchasing another wheelchair for a Handicapped Pomeranian in New York.

New England Greyhounds need homes

November 29th, 2005

3 New England Greyhound Race Tracks will close within the next month or have closed for the Winter season. Live racing will not resume until they reopen in the Spring and that leaves hundreds of dogs looking for homes. There are 100 dogs in Mass already available and probably the same number available from the Seabrook track after the first of the year.
